Anglers on the Oak reported small pods of Kings on the move thru the fast water areas yesterday. Team Screamer (pictured below) won the PRO division with a score of 447.19 and Team Roll With It won the Amateur division with 257.77 points (also pictured below). Over in Wilson, the recent rains actually pulled some salmon into 12 Mile Creek and salmon and trout are being caught off the piers there, as well. Sunday, we caught a decent variety: a couple of big salmon, 2 year olds, matures, a steelhead and couple of cohoes. We recommend wearing cleats and to always be careful crossing. The exciting news is that the beginning of the fall steelhead migration has started, although its be a slow process given the mid October heat wave! The large catfish are biting in Clyde and Palmyra. Thankful for that continued Erie Canal water feed for select tribs as the forecasted precipitation at this time not likely to cause a big change in trib flows. Evereything in the Oak remains open and fishable. Strong upstream headwater supplies are likely driving the water feed below the dam. "On the Water" Media Group and host, Chris Megan with his film crew from East Falmouth, MA were at the Oak today catching an early brown trout following the morning rainfall. To the west at Johnson Creek, flows are medium and mostly clear with reports of some brown trout hookups. For now the drifting conditions are pretty nice all around. In the spring while waiting for perfect conditions sometimes things only get worse, so if theres a reasonable fishing window consider hitting it sooner then later. Despite the cold, a few diehards have been out there scoring on a some smaller browns and a few fine looking chrome steelhead. I would doubt we are heading toward any kind of blow out, but a little stain to the water would sure be a good thing too. We will be searching for a high quality (resolution) photograph in a few months to promote lake fishing in Orleans County. Lakeshore conditions should likewise be wide open if any hardware chuckers were so inclined to make some casts. There would have been a similar few day high/stained fishable water window in the smaller area tribs too. The NYS Canal Corporation releases water from the Erie Canal into Lake Ontario Tributaries in Western New York on an extended and pulsed schedule each fall to enhance trout and salmon fishing opportunities. Look for flows in the Oak to go from the slightly high flows we have now to med and 2 3 ft of visibility. Downstream slow water is getting pretty froggy thanks to rising Lake Ontario levels and the lowering upstream flows. Canal water flow managers are likely throttling back any additional Canal releases into the tribs thanks to all the precipitation.
